Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer Labels: Which Should You Use?

Barcode printers print in one of two ways: direct thermal or thermal transfer. The right choice depends on how long your label must last and where it will be used. Choosing wrongly can mean faded labels, or paying for a ribbon you do not need.

Direct thermal: no ribbon

The print head heats special heat-sensitive labels, which darken where they are heated. There is no ribbon to buy or change.

  • Good for: courier and shipping labels, receipts, and short-life food labels
  • Watch out for: heat, sunlight and rubbing can fade the print over time

Thermal transfer: label plus ribbon

The print head melts ink from a ribbon onto the label. The print usually lasts longer, and works on paper and on synthetic labels such as polyester and PP.

  • Good for: product and asset labels, garment and washcare labels, jewellery tags, and labels that face heat, water or handling
  • Watch out for: the ribbon must suit the label material

Which ribbon for thermal transfer?
