A thin white line running through every label is one of the most common barcode printer faults. It looks small, but a line through a barcode can stop it from scanning. Before you buy any parts, it helps to find the real cause. Most of the time you can do that in a few minutes at your own desk.
First, print a test label
Print a printer self-test label. Your printer's manual shows how. Then look closely at the line:
- The line stays in the same place on every label: the cause is usually at the print head, either dirt or damage.
- The print is faint or patchy, and the line moves: look at the ribbon, the label stock and the print settings.
Step 1: Clean the print head
Dirt, label glue and ribbon residue can stop part of the head from heating the label properly. Switch off the printer and let the head cool. Wipe it gently with a lint-free cloth or swab and isopropyl alcohol. Let it dry fully, then print again. Never scrape the head with anything hard, because that can cause permanent damage.
Step 2: Check the ribbon and the roller
- Look for creases in the ribbon. A wrinkle can leave a line that looks like a head fault.
- Make sure the ribbon suits your label material. Wax, wax-resin and resin ribbons suit different labels.
- Clean the platen roller, the rubber roller under the head. Replace it if it is worn or marked.
Step 3: Check the print settings
Heat (darkness) that is too low can make print look faint, and speed that is too high can do the same. Change one setting at a time and test after each change. Very high heat can shorten the life of a print head, so raise it only as far as the label needs.
When the print head needs replacing
If the line stays in the same place after cleaning, part of the head may be damaged. A replacement must match your printer's exact model and its resolution, 203 dpi or 300 dpi.
How to avoid it next time
- Clean the head when you change a ribbon or a label roll.
- Use good-quality labels and a ribbon that matches them.
- Keep the printer away from dust, and keep label rolls covered.
